"Huh?" she whispered, looking around at her surroundings. She didn't remember how she got here, but here she was, laying in the middle of this strange place. She had just woken up from a deep slumber where she was dreaming about the most beautiful things -- running in a never-ending field with a gorgeous mare by her side. Despite her strange surroundings, Alice sighed happily, placing her forelegs before her and scooting up.
Once on her feet, she shook her body like a wolf would, making a little grunting noise as she shook. The place was very open, but she had managed to find herself a little bush to sleep next to. I'm such an idiot, she sighed, looking at the ground. She took a deep breath in, noticing the smell of a river nearby. Her ears perked forward and her head lifted towards the smell and she walked forward, her hooves lazily dragging in the dried grasses and dust.
She hadn't seen another horse in such a long time, she feared she wouldn't recognize one if it ran into her. Still, she kept her eyes peeled for the strange, yet familiar being. The little sandy mare hummed to herself as she moseyed to the river. Alice kept her head low, ears aloof on the side of her head, and eyes unfocused now. That dream she just had was on her mind. A smile played at the corner of her lips as she thought about it, picturing that perfect life, the one she always dreamt of.
"Silly Alice, dreams like yours never come true," she whispered playfully, cocking her head and squinting her eyes as she stopped at the riverbank. The soil was soft and her feet sunk in. The water trailed slowly down the river, so slow it was almost dead still. Alice sighed and lowered her head to the water for a quick sniff, then slowly brought it back to the level she had it before, even with her withers.

How pleasant the weather had been recently! Fex was thoroughly enjoying herself, despite the recent events that had, unfortunately, ruined any power she had ever had amongst anyone. Vendetta had been killed, killed!. The beast she had thought indestructible had come tumbling down like a pile of bricks before a bulldozer. And it had been her sire whom had done the tumbling... and then abandoned his post. Apparently Arrakis had no need for Kingship. Apparently. Fexy often thought to herself that he must have bigger plans - never did Arrakis, her sire, leave something that meant power! Spinifex was the same. Give her power, give her glory, Fexy would give you her life.
As of now, however, she felt disgraced. She had put her trusts into the wrong stallion. One whom had fallen. The thought made her grumpy and irritable. She'd never had feelings for the beast, no... she hadn't ever felt such a thing, only the pull of power that he had reeked of. A power that had crumbled. Her ear flicked irritably. How unfortunate her life had been. The present though, was doing well by her. She felt a freedom she hadn't felt before, though seemingly nothing had changed. Perhaps she had matured... unlikely. She'd always be a little girl in her head - a spoiled, selfish little girl who stamped her foot if she didn't get what she wanted. A pretty little girl. At least now. Her old appearance, slab shouldered and mean, pinched features.. had gone with the wind.
Well, her shoulders were still slabbed, and her eyes always held that glint of joy at seeing something horrific.. but she held herself better, neater, with more pride.. as if she needed any. She stood upon the plains today with more curious intentions than anything else. She'd never been to the plains before. She'd never thought they would be so big! But they were.. and bare, too... making it easy to see the small silhouette of a mare in the.. well, not the distance.. she was quite close actually. Close enough to intrigue Fex's thoughts anyway.
A quick trot brought her closer, small hooves thudding on the dry earth, sending small clouds of dust behind her. Her ears pricked as she slowed, head raised, wide amber eyes resting on the figure before her, not afraid - for she was confident, and a little too arrogant for her own good, but curious as to what this small, lonesome looking mare might make of her. Vanity had crept its way into Spinifex's life, and she liked to see what others thought of her in the first impression - did they envy her? Was she pretty enough for that? Possibly not. Did they want her? Maybe.. if she made herself desirable. But most of all, could they use her? If the answer in those eyes was yes, Fex had found herself a job.

"La de da da," the little mare sung softly to herself, bouncing her head to the sides and closing her eyes. Ah, what a thrilling life she had! Alice snorted a laugh, then opened her eyes and looked around. She sighed, flicking her tail across her flank. She wondered if she'd ever join a herd again, but when she thought about her past herd, she didn't want to. She missed her old friends, but they were long gone. Do mares even travel together like that anymore?
Small thuds caught her ear and she whipped her head around, searching for the culprit. There was a shadow of a horse (really, is that a horse?) trotting her way. Alice twisted her head back around and stood up straight, shaking her floppy mane and head. She looked down to the river in hopes of seeing her reflection, but it was just dark and muddy. She gave up and swung around to face the on-comer. It was a dun horse, like herself, but she had a white face with a strange diamond-shaped chunk missing from the white.
Alice had a white face, too, but she didn't have a large chunk of white missing. There were little spots, though, and she had spots all on her belly and flank and up her hind legs. They were almost the same dusty color, but Alice was a bit more yellow than the other mare. Then, of course, there was Alice's goofy mane that stood straight up and slouched over in the front half of her neck. She'd never seen another horse with a mane like her's, but it made her unique and Alice appreciated that.. For the most part.
"Hi!" she shouted, with a tad too much excitement. Alice blushed and turned her head in a touch, giggling softly with embarrassment. "Sorry," she whispered, returning her head's position. Her hears were pointed forward, eager to meet and talky to this mare. Gosh, calm down! You're way too happy, stop it! You'll scare her off! she scolded herself, which made her body relax a bit. Alice had a problem with trying to impress others right away, because of her fear of rejection.
She always figured if they shared the same interests, maybe she wouldn't be left in the dust. It was always worth a shot, right? If she were alone, she'd shake her head and tell herself "no, no, no," but she wasn't alone and it would be sort of weird. The mare's smile started to lose it's spirit, and her eyes drifted to the left, but she quickly focused her attention on the new mare and broadened her smile.

Well she'd been noticed. The reaction she received was odd, and Spinifex watched curiously as the small mare brightened and stood up straighter, ears pricked and eyes eager. She could see the stranger checking her features, scanning for memorable attributes - it made her a little uncomfortable, not that she'd admit it. It was not often Fex met with other mares, and when she did, she had not been pleasant. But times were different now, perhaps she would be too. Besides, she was curious as to what this petite little creature was doing all alone on the wide plains.. it didn't look as if she could protect herself from any unwanted attention.
Spinifex, however, prided herself on that ability. She was almost as brutish as her sire when it came to fighting. It was an attribute she took pleasure in using. And all of a sudden, quite a shock was given to her ears, making her attention snap back to the mare, eyes almost indignant at the rude awakening. Hi... not the best for opening a conversation, especially when it was shouted in your face. An apology followed quickly, though the mare didn't seem to be dispirited at her outburst at all. Spinifex felt the corner of her mouth lift in amusement. This little creature seemed so innocent! So sweet. Fex liked to think that, just perhaps, if she had had a different upbringing, she might have turned out similar.. but the idea was quite foreign to her. Why not be civil for once?
"Hello."
Maybe she should have said more.. but she hadn't exactly been given any conversation starters. As the other mares eyes started to wander and smile fade, Spinifex thought it best to give the dear something to work with.
"What's your name, sweet? And why are you here all alone? Tough world out here, believe me."
There. It wasn't going to work wonders, but it was possible some of the initial awkwardness might fade after conversation began. Fex had to admit she was interested - a small dun mare out here all alone? Pretty and petite, obviously innocent.. it wasn't often you saw any of those around anymore.

Alice watched the mare eagerly. Her ears perked even more when she said hello to her. Alice nodded to her; she flicked her tail and took a half step forward. "My name is Alice," she said. "What's yours?" She cocked her head, then returned it to it's normal position before answering the mare's other question. "Um, well.." Alice paused for a moment, looking away from the stranger.
"I, uh, was separated from my herd." Well, it was true. Alice swallowed and turned back to the mare, her ears turned to the side. "I've just been kind of wandering around.. I know it's not safe.." her voice trailed off and her eyes flashed to the ground. Calm down! she ordered herself. She didn't want this mare thinking suspiciously of her, not that Alice was hiding anything.. Or was she?
The little mare turned back to the stranger, perking up, but it wasn't whole-hearted and it was obvious. "So what about you, stranger?" She gave a weak smile and ducked her neck a bit, so she was somewhat looking up at the horse.
ooc: Bah, hope this isn't too shoddy for you. -dead-
